15 defining football moments in Nigeria in the year 2015

2015 has been a great year for football in Nigeria as a number of the teams representing the country achieved greatness. On the local scene, the Nigeria Professional Football League witnessed a lot of positive changes amid commendations and also, the age-grade teams all did considerably well. Here are 15 key moments of the year: 1) The sack of Stephen Keshi 2015 was the year of ‘change’ and one of the first major changes that shook Nigerian football was the sack of Coach Stephen Keshi. The NFF sacked Keshi over news that he applied through his agent to be the coach of Ivory Coast – who at the time was searching for one – while still the manager of the Super Eagles. It is instructive to note that prior to the incident, relationship between the NFF and Stephen Keshi was not rosy and at a point, it took the intervention of Ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan to prevent from being relieved of his duties. However, things got to a head with the Ivory Coast brouhaha and Keshi was asked to pack his belongings. He would have ran to the Aso Rock but sadly, a change had occurred there too. 2)The appointment of Sunday Oliseh After the sack of Stephen Keshi, It appeared the NFF must have consulted ace movie director, Steven Spielberg on suspense and drama creation as they put that...

Apple: A luxury many cannot afford-even at Christmas | By: Femi Oladele

In many parts of Nigeria, a small apple sells for fifty naira only (N50) but it is surprising that it has become a luxury many Nigerians cannot afford. The reason is not far-fetched; we cannot see the reason to spend that much on a product with less utility, because the idea is that it has no potential to satisfy hunger nor thirst and has been accepted largely as the exclusive luxury of the wealthy. Let me expatiate: why would I spend so much on just one fruit, when I have Mango freely growing at the back of my house or even on the street, and Guava, Orange, which sell for a lot less etc. However, apple in this article is not a fruit, but our lives. Nigerians can no longer afford their lives. Why? Even when we have the resources to help us take charge and to steer the affairs of our nation, we do not see it as something we can afford; it is too much for us to spend on. As cheap as it is, it is still beyond our reach and until we own up to the fact that things can get better when we work towards it, we will continue to see metrics such as growth, development, stability as the exclusive preserve of European nations and we will never have a taste, not even a...

Barcelona sack player hours after signing him over offensive tweets.

Be careful of what you post on social media. A seemingly harmless tweet or Facebook post might make or mar you. Sergi Guardiola, a player who was signed into Barcelona B team was sacked same day, as a matter of fact, 7 hours later following some offensive tweets he posted sometime 2013. Three tweets were dug out by Spanish press. All translated in English..  1) ‘Up Real Madrid and to hell with Catalonia’ 2) ‘Today to hell with Catalonia and up Real Madrid’. 3) I wouldn’t have Messi in my team – he just walks about… he spoils the way the team plays  The club later released a statement on the issue. “FC Barcelona has decided to terminate the contract signed with Sergi Guardiola, after finding that he had published offensive tweets about the club and Catalonia.”  The distraught player told  Spanish radio station Cope  “I know I made a mistake. I apologise to Catalonia and Barcelona. I understand the decision, I’d do the same. “I want to make clear I didn’t write those tweets. A friend took my phone and did it. It’s a misunderstanding. “The tweets are from 2013, a joke from a friend, I didn’t even know the tweets existed. “Barcelona have treated me very well. I understand their decision. Now I’m going home, we’ll see what happens.” the 24 year-old...

Rafael Benitez claims there’s a campaign against him and the club.

The ‘campaign’ talk, a familiar phrase in football. To cut the long story short, it is one of Jose Mourinho’ infamous phrases. Real Madrid coach, Rafa Benitez believes there is a campaign against him, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club. Real who had a mind-blowing outing weeks back, walloping Rayo Vallecano 10-2 are two points off the top of La Liga. Speaking at a news conference today ahead of Real’ clash with Real Sociedad, the ex Liverpool manager said  “There is a campaign against (president) Florentino (Perez), Real Madrid and me. “Everything is criticised that can be and where not it is manipulated which anyone can see. This is particularly clear if you look at the situation from the outside.” “Everything is being magnified and I have a lot of experience coaching so I know to be distracted as little as possible. “I have 24 players in the squad but when I leave out one player then it is made out that it is something personal and a load of speculation is built up. The team is a lot better than people think. My relationship with the players is infinitely better than what you read in the press. There is a communications department that keeps me informed. The team is doing some things well and others not so...

Femi Fani-Kayode Writes Open Letter To Buhari

Mr. President, as one of your most loyal and faithful subjects who has nothing but the utmost respect for your person and your office I am constrained to write you this open letter. This is because there are a number of issues that I believe that it is important for you to clarify and to come clean on. I say this because some of your assertions of late are at best contradictory and at worst patently dishonest. Whichever side of the political divide we are on I believe that we can all agree on one thing: that the prosecution of the war against terror is not something that any of us should play politics with. This is especially so given the fact that human lives are at stake and the very existence of our nation is under threat. Like much of the rest of the world our country is going through hell at the hands of the jihadists and Islamist terrorists. There is no gainsaying that we must all come to terms with the fact that the Islamic State in the Levant (ISIL), Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Al Shabab, Boko Haram, Hamas and another group that the internationally-respected Global Terror Index has described as the ”Fulani militants” (aka Fulani herdsmen) are nothing but bloodthirsty murderers and the lowest form of life. They are indeed the scum of the earth,...

Basketmouth and Freeze throw jabs at each other.

I hope this feud ends soon.  So it all started from Basketmouth. You know when it comes to that profession, comedians really don’t know how to draw the line. So last night at singer, Olamide’s concert, Basketmouth fired the shot at OAP, Daddy Freeze, asking if he had been beaten by his wife that day. (in reference to the claims Freeze made early this year of being a victim of domestic abuse.) “There’s this former Cool FM presenter here, Freeze. I see am for red carpet, where him dey?” “Make una nor deceived by this guy’s fair skin o. Nor be oyinbo o, na eczema cause am o. Freeze my guy, your wife nor beat you today?” He said. That didn’t sit well with the radio host who took to his IG page to diss him. He shared a pic of a basket containing some coins and pleaded with his followers to donate to Basketmouth’s career. “#PutAJokeInTheBasket please help an old colleague resurrect his ailing career by donating a #joke! His performance at #OLIC2 was just too weak! N50,000 for the best joke! Let’s help him keep his dream alive” He wrote. Not letting Freeze’s jab slide, Basketmouth slammed him again on his Instagram page with two different pictures. “You know you’re irrelevant when you diss someone on IG and you get just 18 comments…half of them by you.”...

It’s A Class War, Stupid! | By: Joseph Edgar

Nigerians, just like when Bill Clinton told the Americans during one of his election campaigns that it was the economy, I am also now telling Nigerians that it is a class war period. Our sufferings and frustrations are not because we belong to any section of the country or because we are Igbos as the hapless Nnamdi Kanu and his ilk would have us believe it is simply because we remain the grass under the feet of a collection of elephants in a continous struggle for power both political and economic. Our low level of education and enlightenment continue to put us in positions of servitude to be used and misused by the elites whose membership cut across ethnic lines and are kept together by their collective greed. The Marxists pushed this position in the 70s and we refused to see it. I have been mulling these thoughts and have decided to expand on it as I now have incontrovertible evidence that our oppressors do not take their decisions based on the integrity or otherwise of the people they claim to represent but are driven by the urge for the primitive and continuous accumulation of power and wealth. My people, I watched this documentary on Nigeria and it was very clear that the civil war, several coups and economic bastardization that we have faced since we gained independence have...

Opinion: Nigeria is no longer one. Nnamdi Kanu is more dangerous than Boko Haram

I write with a heavy heart as a result of what is going on under your leadership regarding the Biafra agitation and the leader of the IPOB (Indigenous people of Biafra), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. Let me first say that I, as an Igbo person, supported your election and campaign passionately for it on social media, but I am now on neutral grounds, because of the way you are handling the cry for Biafra though I will always support any good strides you are making for the people of Nigeria. Some of the reasons I supported you are:  1. Your wife said during a pre-election interview that you promised to lead by listening to the concerns of the people and doing what the people want. 2. As a former soldier in the United States Army, I knew that the discipline you have as a retired general of Nigeria Army is what is needed to clean up the corruption that has long retarded the progress of Nigeria. However, during your interview in the USA, I believe at the State Department after your election you were asked a question about how you would handle the Niger Delta on amnesty and women issues, your answer was that and I quote, “constituents that gave me 97 percent votes cannot, in all honesty, be treated equally with constituents that gave me 5 percent.” Both videos...
