Wolfsburg complete signing of Draxler

Wolfsburg have completed the signing of Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler. Draxler, 21, joins the DFB Pokal holders for a fee believed to be around €36 million, plus add-ons. The Germany international, who can play on the wing and in a more central role, had been linked with a transfer to Juventus throughout the summer, but has opted to remain in the Bundesliga instead. Wolfsburg opened talks with Draxler following the 3-0 defeat of Schalke on Friday, when it had become evident  that both Ivan Perisic and Kevin De Bruyne were to leave the club during the final days of the transfer window. Perisic went on to sign for Inter MIlan, while De Bruyne joined Manchester City. Kicker has reported that Draxler, who had three years left on his contract at Schalke, and Wolfsburg agreed personal terms on Saturday. Schalke general manager Horst Heldt Heldt said on the club’s official website: “There are two reasons for our decision to accept Wolfsburg’s offer: We will not be disclosing information about the transfer fee, but we can say that it is the biggest transfer we’ve received for a player at...

Vincent Kompany convinced me to join Manchester City – De Bryne

Kevin De Bruyne has said Vincent Kompany helped persuade him to join Manchester City, and has set his sights on winning silverware after completing his club record move to the Etihad Stadium. De Bruyne finally signed for City on Sunday in a £54 million deal, replacing Raheem Sterling as the most expensive signing in their history. The 24-year-old Belgium international helped Wolfsburg win the DFB-Pokal last season and is looking forward to securing more trophies with the Premier League leaders. “Here is a good chance to win some titles with a team who has a lot of quality players,” he told City’s official website. “I had a great time in Germany, a successful one-and-a-half years, and we won some titles — so now I think it is a new chance to be better as a player and hopefully I can do good.” De Bruyne is a Belgium teammate of City captain Kompany and said the centre-back had told him about the merits of life at the Etihad Stadium. “He called me a couple of times and we spoke on the phone,” he added. “He told me that the club can take good care of me and they will help me, and said to follow your heart and mind and if you come to City I will be happy. “It is always nice when you have some familiar faces. I know...

Aaron Ramsey claims it’s too early to judge performance

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey insists that it is too early to judge teams in the Premier League as he hit back at recent criticism from former Manchester United defender Gary Neville. Arsenal’s slow start to the season — as they took seven points from four games — has been criticised in the media but, after a morale-boosting 1-0 win over 10- man Newcastle this weekend, Ramsey believes that the early games do not offer a true reflection of how the table will look at the end of the season. “It’s too early now,” he said. “You can’t read too much into how the table is looking. You have to wait 10 games and see where you are then. “Teams are going to have upsets and so many things can happen in this league. Hopefully that opening-day upset against West Ham will be our only one for a long time. “If we go on a run now after the international break, and win our next five or six games, then we will be there or thereabouts again. It’s important just to concentrate on what we know we can do.” Neville’s criticism was widely reported, but the Wales midfielder insists that the Arsenal players just try to focus on their own performance. “We don’t take too much notice,” he added. “We know what we’re capable of doing. “We know the players...

LVG insists Manchester United will not Panic-Buy despite defeat

Louis van Gaal insisted Manchester United’s defeat to Swansea will not prompt him to panic-buy in the final 48 hours of the transfer window. United lost 2-1 in Wales to end their unbeaten start to the season but manager Van Gaal, whose defence struggled to cope with Swansea scorers Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis and whose team have only scored three goals in four league games, said it will not change his thinking. “It doesn’t have any effect,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports. “When you are scouting players, you know in advance, more than a month or two months, which players you can buy. It is not in the last moments you can panic.” Van Gaal declined to answer questions about Javier Hernandez, who has been linked with several clubs, and the Real Madrid target David De Gea. But the Dutchman declared his team were probably “too dominant” at the Liberty Stadium to respond properly when Swansea changed shape in the second half by going to a 4-4-2 diamond system, prompting their comeback after Juan Mata put United...

Understanding Buhari in 100 Days |By: Garba Shehu

The enormously popular talk show, Berekete on Wazobia FM radio, Abuja station, told the incredible, yet true story of the hardworking and respected school teacher somewhere in Plateau state who hanged himself. He hadn’t been paid salary for seven straight months. He came home to find that no one had eaten and two of the children had medical prescriptions for which there was no money. He sneaked out without talking to anyone. After a long while, news came home that he had strangely been caught with a stolen goat. On his day in court, the teacher confessed to the offense. The reason he stole, he told the local judge, was that he hadn’t been paid for seven months and when he got home to see what he saw, he just couldn’t stand it. The judge allowed him to go home on bail on self-recognition given, as he said, the good impression the entire village had of the otherwise respected teacher. All were shocked to find his body dangling from tree the morning after. He couldn’t live with the shame. In the recommendations and notes the Ahmed Joda transition committee presented to him as President -EIect, Muhammadu Buhari was informed that a section of the Fedaral government as well as 27 states hadn’t paid salaries, in some case for up to a year. The Joda committee advised that this was a...

I can spend the whole night proving that Obasanjo is a liar- Wole Soyinka

The war of words between Professor Wole Soyinka and ex President Olusegun Obasanjo isn’t ending anytime soon.  The award-winning writer when asked to respond to the 3-time President’s assessment of him in his book, My Watch reiterated that he has no iota of respect for him. The Nobel Laureate said this in a programme tagged: ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’ organized by Globacom yesterday 28th August 2015. Recall that Obasanjo described the literary icon as a political illiterate who is better at wine connoisseur and a more successful aparo (guinea fowl).  Soyinka in his reply said he couldn’t be bothered because Obasanjo is a liar and an economic illiterate. He also dislosed his intention to feature him in his new book, ‘The Republic Of Liars.’ “Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion. But the question is: ‘Who respects the opinion of a liar? I can spend the whole night proving that he is a liar. Obasanjo was once described by an economist, the late Prof Ojetunji Aboyade, as an economic illiterate. They nearly ‘went into blow’ that night. It was Prof. Mabogunje who separated them. So, if an economic illiterate calls somebody a political illiterate, no problem at all. In ‘ My Watch’, Obasanjo told the first lie when he said he deplored lies. Anybody who said he never plotted to have an unconstitutional third term in office, even as a writer, I need...

Three games to keep an eye on this weekend

1. Arsenal Vs Newcastle: It’d be interesting to see how Wenger will respond to criticism from pundits and sport journos today as he lead his side to the St James Park. Arsenal have only managed a win from three games after losing at home to West Ham in the opening game and playing a barren draw with Liverpool last week. The team’s defence has been rocked with the absence of first choice center backs; Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Newcastle on the other hand will be hoping they get their first win of the season on home ground against a familiar foe. History and statistics favor Arsenal and fans of the club will be hoping the turn-around they seek starts today with probably a big win and better play. Expect premium entertainment and intense battle between Arsenal’s strike force and Newcastle’s resilient defence led and coordinated by Collocinni who contributed greatly to Manchester United’s inability to get a goal last week. 2. Bayern Munich Vs Bayern Leverkusen: Bayern Munich got an early scare last week after going from a goal down to win 2-1 against Hoffenheim with 10men. Although alot of people rightly consider them as favorites to win the league, events are however showing that they won’t be strolling to the trophy. The likes of Dortmund, Wolfsburg and Bayern Leverkusen are picking full points and scoring freely –...

Can Fashola Really Go To Jail? Etcetera Writes

The APC is now being haunted by the saying, “When you point one finger, there are three fingers pointing back at you.” If it knew, it wouldn’t have accused Goodluck Jonathan of running a very corrupt government. Most times, we forget to listen to the voice of reason that says, “Look in the mirror, brother. You might just be talking about yourself.” It is now clear that the APC focused on the speck in Jonathan’s eye and ignored the log in their own eyes.” Who would have thought that just few weeks into a new regime in Lagos State, Fashola would be engulfed with the following accusations – Drilling of just two bore holes with N139m, remodelling and equipping of the official residence of the state’s Chief Judge at N510m, reconstructing of a car park with N640m, spending N300m to relocate cables, N175m to replace the railings of a pedestrian bridge, N220m on the facility management of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, N619m on surface repair of a road, N1.2bn on the construction of an unidentified multi-storey building, N1.6bn on the construction of a 48-bedroom hotel. These things don’t seem like what a person as intelligent as the former governor would do; especially for those of us who regard him as one of the very few bright spots of our democracy. In fact, I am still of...

Amaechi never spoke to any media organisation – Media Office

The attention of former governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been drawn to a story with the caption SGF: Buhari Disappointed Me – Amaechi”, published by a certain “Savinggracereporters.com”. The story which is ridiculous as it is meaningless is a figment of the writer’s imagination and sadly flouts all the basic rules of journalism biz: fairness, accuracy and balance. Van Persie stripped of Holland’s arm band, Robben appointed as new captain

Arjen Robben has been made captain of the Netherlands in Danny Blind’s first squad since taking over from Guus Hiddink as national coach, replacing striker Robin Van Persie. Blind said on Friday he needs a captain with more “on-field presence” as his team heads into two crucial European Championship qualifiers against Group A leader Iceland and Turkey. “I have not made this choice based on their soccer skills,” Blind told the Dutch federation’s website. “In the guidance and coaching of teammates Van Persie and Robben are not inferior to each other — but they are two different personalities and right now I need a leader with [Robben’s] on-field presence.” Robben said: “I consider it a great honour that the coach has asked me to be captain and will fulfil this role with great pride and responsibility. “But I also want to emphasise that we should do it right, all together. We have a common goal — to make the European Championships.” Van Persie said he understood Blind’s decision. “I have had a good talk with the coach, who indicated his understanding to choose his own captain in this new project,” the Fenerbahce striker said. “I’ve always said Arjen, I and the other guys did it together. I will fill the role of vice-captain with pride. I will always give everything for my...
