The level of stupidity in supporters of some politicians is beyond comprehension – Etcetera

Stupid is a word that has a broad range of applications, but it generally means a person lacks rudimentary intelligence or the ability to reason. It can also imply a congenital lack of capacity for reasoning, or a permanent state of daze or slow-mindedness.  However one defines or applies the word stupid, you can hardly think of the word without directly relating it to the utterances of some Buhari’s supporters; especially the supposedly literate ones. Over the past week, it became apparent that the level of stupidity inherent in those inclined to support certain politicians at all cost is beyond comprehension. In fact, it is frightening that so many Nigerians of voting age lack the fundamental reasoning ability of a second-grader and are even less-informed about basic facts than a kindergarten. I have heard some of the most bizarre ideas peddled by some Buhari’s supporters and I am really concerned about the future of this country. I have heard troubling statements like: “It really doesn’t matter if Buhari is qualified or not, he must be the next president and we’ll vote for him. Even if he presents a NEPA bill as certificate, we don’t care, we will vote for him. Are these people for real? To base your position on whatever absurdity your favourite candidate espouses; regardless of reality is the reason why we are in this hell of...

How To Introduce Yourself At A Social, Business or Networking Event | By: Helen Ozor

Knowing how to introduce yourself to others and engage in conversation is a vital part of business, social, and networking etiquette. Using a process and employing a strategy will help reduce anxiety and increase your confidence. I hope this few tips below would help.. First, it is advisable you try to arrive to the event early. It’s not so daunting to walk into a room and approach people and introduce yourself if the room is not so crowded. If you arrive midway through an event, it’s more intimidating to approach people because it often appears everyone is already conversing in small groups. Next, after entering the room, step to the right of the doorway and pause. Briefly scan the room for anyone you specifically want to meet, such as new. clients or key people. You may also consider introducing yourself to a “Lone Ranger,” someone standing alone who may not know anyone and is too shy to reach out. A “Lone Ranger” is usually delighted when someone approaches to talk and will most often respond positively to your  confidence. Next, is the “approach.” Try to make eye contact with the Lone Ranger or   key person, etc. Smile, approach the person, extend your hand, and say your first and last name and company name. For example, greet the individual by saying, “Hello—I’m (first and last name) from (company name). Do you mind if I join...

Opinion: What Manner Of Change Is APC Chanting? | By: Shaka Momodu

As I sit down to write this piece, I cannot but be amused by the change chorus around me. Even though I sense some genuine desire to have things go in a different direction, I get this sneaky feeling that a vast majority of Nigerians are being duped by some smart and clever businessmen masquerading as progressive democrats and agents of change. They sensed resentment and keyed in with the change slogan which seems to have caught on like a wildfire in the harmattan. But when you ask those clamouring for change; change to what? They just stare blankly at you unsure of how to answer. And when the answer eventually comes, it’s a disappointment, “we just want change.” That is the first inkling you get that some of our choristers of change hardly understand the issues at stake. Now, are these promoters of change really agents of change? Are they really the democrats they profess to be? The evidence around me suggests otherwise. I think they are part of the problems Nigerians need change from. The values and virtues of democracy which they profess and claim allegiance are observed more in breach by these people who claim to be the long awaited messiahs destined to liberate our countrymen from the bondage of corrupt managers of public wealth. They remind us every day of the rot in the system...

APC has more thinking people than the PDP – Iyabo Obasanjo writes

Reactions have continue to trail erstwhile Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Charles Soludo’s article published few days back. Iyabo Obasanjo, former senator and daughter of ex Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo has deemed the article as the best she has read recently on the real situation politically and economically in Nigeria. Below is her writeup on Vanguard newspaper. Titled: Soludo, Fayemi and Fani-Kayode: My takeaway: 1. Professor Soludo’s article on the elections in Nigeria is the best writing I have read recently on the real situation politically and economically in Nigeria. The well-articulated response from Dr. Fayemi compared to the abuse infused response from Femi Fani-Kayode on the PDP side is a great example of the contrast of the status-quo compared to the alternative. 2. Whatever the case and I don’t expect miracles from APC but right now they have more thinking people than the PDP.  As a Yoruba person, Dr. Fayemi’s response is how we expect our educated elite to take up issues and not the mad ranting’s of Fani-Kayode. 3. I agree with most of his premise but I do not think they (APC) can take up a massive public works program in a period of “famine” i.e. low oil prices. 4. During the great depression when Roosevelt used public works to help provide jobs, it was the stock market that failed i.e. Government revenue was affected...

Skintimidation; a Nollywood phenomenon | By: Daniel Boyle

It is no longer news that our celebrities are going white! And that’s because you have to be “camera friendly” says the producer. A friend of mine says “you have to be seen by the producer from 200km away” If you have been a fervent follower of Nollywood, you would notice this gradual change as the actresses you used to refer to as “dark skinned” are now called “caramel abi chocolate” I won’t call names oh, but you should decode this fast; one of them used to be a model, she’s in her forties now and was sometime married to a white man. She’s been a brand ambassador to a big telecoms company as well as our favourite seasoning powder. The second one is the ultimate diva who is known to be box office material, compare these two movies and contrast the skin tone “ijele” and “ije” The third one is our darling sweet heart, short and full of life (with a white husband) who is known now to be producing her own movies… These three were originally known as “dark skinned” but today? The lord has been gracious to them that their blessing came with a new skin. Even the music industry isn’t any duller as our boys are making us proud skin-wise, with our Naija lil wayne denying that he isn’t bleaching, well he isn’t! Lol he...

Winners Chapel releases official statement on “gate of hell” allegations.

“Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to the President and founder of the Living Faith Church worldwide, also Known as Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, which has gone viral. He was reported to have made the statement last Sunday when the President of the federal republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan came to worship at Faith Tabernacle, which is the headquarters of the ministry. The falsehood that is being spread around by mischief makers is that the Bishop, while praying for the President, said, “I will open the gates of hell to anyone who oppose you.” A little later, some others who in an attempt to “defend” the Bishop, came up with another quote purportedly said by Dr. Oyedepo, which is: “I will open the gates of hell to those who oppose the peace of this nation.” Well, let’s set the records straight: The Press and Publicity Unit of the church, publishers of Faith Tabernacle News, was at the 3rd service and recorded (on tape), the President’s 6-minute speech, the congregational prayer for him and the Bishop’s blessing on the President. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the presidential candidate of the ruling party – the PDP, came to the church as the President of this country, not as a candidate in the forthcoming elections. And Bishop Oyedepo prayed for him, as instructed in the...
