Harrysong charges N1m to write a song? For real?

Nigerian artistes pay as much as N1m to have their songs written by professional songwriters? For real? That’s exactly what rave of the moment singer, Harrysong of the “Taiye Kehinde’ and “I’m in Love” fame told a PUNCH journalist. The Five Star Entertainment artiste also disclosed that he made over N50m from MTN callerback tunes for his “Mandela song”, well, the song actually got millions of downloads. “Before now we charged between N100, 000 and N2000, 000 for a song. Today I charge as much as 1million to write a song. Truth is, Nigerian artistes have begun to appreciate songwriters. They pay me my money and appreciate me. I have written a lot of songs but I don’t talk about them because Nigerian artistes don’t like it when the songwriters take credit for composing songs for them.” The proceeds from the caller-back tune is actually worth more than N50m. Truth is, I was paid a lot of money; you know – when they say money that can change someone’s life. That’s the value of what I received. I can’t reveal the exact amount because we work as a team. So, all the money realised is shared among us. You just want to forget all the years of suffering. It’s not a mere hype because the money is there. The song is everywhere. You go to South-Africa , the...

Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Gani Fawehinmi’s families reject Centenary Awards. (Read their reasons)

The families of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Gani Fawehinmi have joined the list of Nigerians who have rejected the national honours by the Federal Government and they all have cogent reasons. The award ceremony is scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja, today February 28, 2014. Award-winning writer, Professor Wole Soyinka’s reasons might sound confusing but the most important thing to know is he rejected the honour, “I would have preferred that the entire day of infamy be ignored altogether. I’m even thinking favourably of just ignoring the obscenity, then turning up at the counter- event.” As far as the family of late Afro Beat legend and human activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti are concerned they are not even aware of the award. Grammy award nominee, Femi Anikulapo- Kuti who spoke to PM news stated that they will accept the award if the government first of all apologises for the murder of his grandmother and burning his father’s house. “We have not heard such but I can speak for myself, FG should first apologise for the killing of our grandmother and the burning of Kalakuta. I doubt if the family will accept the award.” Femi awarded. The family of late legal luminary Chief Gani Fawehinmi, have the “longest” reasons. In a later signed by the eldest son of the late lawyer, Mohammed Fawehinmi and...

Short Story: Forty Minutes Out of Town | By: Morountodun

“Can you believe Tony?!” I hissed at Tosin, furious. It was my twentieth birthday, and my friends, Tosin, Chris and Tony had taken me on a fun day trip. Tosin had been my roommate and bestie for a year before we met the guys. They were cousins and a year ahead of us in school, and somehow we became friends. Tosin and Chris started dating after six months but we all remained really close. Tony’s parents had gifted him with one of their cars on his admission into university, and for my birthday cruise, we visited a zoo out of town. Then we decided to have an early dinner at a cosy restaurant before heading back, and Tony had just ruined it by asking me out in front of the others, right in the middle of the meal. I had been dumbfounded, till Tosin kicked my feet under the table and told me, “It’s been five minutes, girl you need to say something.” What I’d said was, “I need to pee.” She had followed me after the waiter pointed out the ‘restrooms’, and she replied now, “You either want to date him or not. What’s there not to believe? It’s no big deal.” There was only a room each for the male and female toilets, both sharing a corridor. I was going to knock to see if the females’...

Samuel Eto’o annoyed at Mourinho’s jibe

Naturally he won’t like it but his tongue is tied for obvious reasons. Although the striker hasn’t spoken to the press about it but Claude Le Roy, former Cameroon coach who contacted him revealed that he was really angry. “I had him on the phone just before I came on screen, and he’s very annoyed. Actually, Mourinho went to see him before he saw the pictures and told him to not believe everything that was going to be said. And that he had said nothing about him. But I can tell you that Samuel didn’t like it.” But the Chelsea boss insists their relationship won’t be severed. ” First of all because I don’t make fun. Secondly, because if there are managers in the world who really defend their players, I’m obviously one of them. And thirdly because Samuel Eto’o is Samuel Eto’o. He’s four times a Champions League winner: people think three times, but one in Real Madrid, two in Barcelona and one with...

“It’s a disgrace”. Mourinho furious at journalist who filmed his comment about Samuel Eto’o

That Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho loves the spotlight so much is a fact not subject to any argument.  He’s been on sports headlines of late for several reasons; good, bad and funny. His habit of having a go at others unchallenged will never go unnoticed. Well we could consider this a taste of his own medicine. Earlier on, the ex Real Madrid coach thought he made an off-record comment when he told a media house he lacked strikers and went as far as questioning Samuel Eto’o’s true age. “The problem with Chelsea is I lack a striker. I have Eto’o but he is 32 years old, maybe 35, who knows?” He stated. The Jaguar ambassador after his attention was drawn to the footage has not hidden his disappointment at the media house who aired his “harmless statement”. He says, “It was a funny conversation with somebody that doesn’t belong to the football world.” He continued, “It is a disgrace that someone is taping a private conversation I’m not defending what I’m saying. I’m attacking something that is, I think, fundamental in your professional area and that person. showed exactly what he is or what he does not know about the job. From my perspective, the comment is not obviously a good one, not one I would do in a serious way, not something I would do in an official...

“Arsene Wenger has done minor miracles”

Call him a Specialist in failure or a trophyless business man, there are other people who believe Arsene Wenger remains a fantastic manager. Arsenal Legend, Bob Wilson is one of them. He thinks the Frenchman has done extremely well and his achievements cannot be measured in trophies alone (despite the 9-year drought at the English club) “When you put everything into perspective in terms of the money and where the game is at, then to even be challenging this season, a point behind Chelsea with the way the club is managed, is a minor miracle and a great feather in the cap for this squad of players. If Arsenal could win the league this year, then in my opinion that would be an achievement to rank close to the ‘invincibles’ season. I look not only Arsene’s great achievements when he first came. “It is about what has happened since then, with (Arsenal) building a new ground and all the debt that incurred, but still getting in the Champions League. Obviously you are going all that time without winning a trophy, which is now nearly nine years, but who has been winning things? Yes, Wigan won the FA Cup last year, but you need to play well and have the luck of the draw, but if you are talking about the major things, being champions of your country and Europe,...
